A Brief History of Christmas Wreaths
Christmas Farms has been making fresh Christmas wreaths for customers throughout the United States for many years, and we always look forward to the next season. However, in today’s post, with winter winding down, let’s take a look back and see how the wreath became such an iconic symbol of the Christmas holiday season.
The Ancient Origins
Wreath usage can be traced all the way back to ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. In ancient Greece, wreaths were worn as signs of victory and honor. Romans used wreaths in different celebrations, including Saturnalia (which is a precursor to modern Christmas celebrations). Romans believed wreaths symbolized prosperity, eternal life, and triumph.
Pre-Christian Traditions
In pre-Christian Europe, Germanic and Scandinavian people used evergreen wreaths during winter solstice celebrations. Evergreen plants were used because they stayed green throughout the winter months, symbolizing endurance and hope during this dark time of year.
Christian Adaptation
With Christianity spreading throughout Europe, the wreath is one of many pagan customs that were incorporated into Christian traditions. The evergreen wreath symbolizes eternal life, the never-ending love of God, and the victory of life over death. The circular shape of the wreath also symbolizes the endless cycle of life.
Advent Wreaths
Beginning in the 16th century. The Advent wreath became a tradition in Christian celebrations, especially in Germany. These Advent wreaths were adorned with four or five candles with a new one lit every Sunday in the weeks leading up to the celebration of Christ’s birth.
Modern Christmas Traditions
The use of Christmas wreaths had spread throughout most of Europe and into the Americas by the 19th century. They were used in much the same way as they are used today – hung in windows or on door, or used as table centerpieces and decorated with ribbons, ornaments, or other festive décor.
Christmas Farms is proud to help continue this tradition by making handmade Christmas wreaths for people throughout the country. Contact us if you have any questions about the products we make.
